Website Creation Glossary - BUILDLink

Here you'll find a list of terms that might come in handy when editing your BUILDLink website - and in general when interacting with computers and websites.

List of terms that could be important when editing a website

For example, your BUILDLink account is a password secured area through which you edit your BUILDLink websites. | | AdBlocker | A browser extension that blocks ads and pop-up windows. | | Alias | An email alias is a forwarding email address, meaning that all emails addressed to the alias are forwarded to one or multiple other email accounts.An alias does not come with its own inbox. You can use an alias to hide your real email address from visitors and to create a contact address using your website domain. | | Alt Text / Alt Attribute | Stands for alternative text. These short texts should describe images for search engines, as well as screen readers for the blind and visually impaired. | | App | Short for application. Apps are programs and software, but the term is mainly used to describe smartphone applications. | | AuthCode | A uniquely generated code that is necessary if you wish to transfer your domain from one registrar to another. | | Backup | A saved version of a website or document. | | Banner | An element on your website that you can use to highlight certain information (for example contact information, special offers, etc.). | | Block | These are the components - or content blocks - with which you build your BUILDLink website. | | Blocklist | Using the blocklist, you can prevent the reception of emails from specific email addresses. | | Bookmark | A browser feature with which you can save a link in your library for quick access. | | Broken Link | A link is considered broken if the URL doesn't forward to another page or resource. A website should not contain broken links. | | Browser / Web Browser | A program or application through which you can open and view websites. | | Bug | A technical issue preventing a software or device from working properly. | | Cache | Your browser's intermediate storage. This is where data is being stored so that it doesn't need to be downloaded upon repeated website visits. | | Captcha | An online security test placed on websites. Captcha confirms that the user is actually human and not a program. Using Captcha, automated attacks can be prevented. | | Chatbot | A program that automatically answers questions within a chat. Often used in support. | | Client | A program that accesses server services, for instance an email client that manages messages on an email server. | | Cloud | Online storage that can be used to save documents and other files. | | CMS | CMS stands for content management system and describes a user interface, i.e. the BUILDLink website builder with which you can create and edit a website. | | CNAME | A Canonical Name record is a domain setting which you can use to forward a domain to a specific URL. | | Cookie | Data collected by the browser while visiting websites. For instance, cookies save information that personalize the experience on a website or to understand individual visitors better. | | Crawler/Crawling | A virtual robot browsing the Internet to collect information. For example, this is how Google finds your website and adds it to their search results. | | Crowdsourcing | The words crowd and outsourcing are combined to form the word crowdsourcing. This describes the process of handing over tasks to a group of volunteers on the internet. | | csv | CSV stands for comma-separated values. It's a file format for data transfer (i.e. in an Excel file). You can use this format to export your store orders to an external data tool (i.e. Excel or Google Sheets). | | Cursor | The visual representation of where you are moving your mouse or touchpad on your screen. | | Desktop | The lowest or last window level in your operating system. As long as there are no programs running or all running programs are minimized, you'll see the desktop. | | DNS | DNS stands for Domain Name System. It's a domain setting you can use to forward a domain to specific servers. | | Domain | The domain is the address of your website that people can type in their browser to visit your website. If you imagine your website as a house, that would make the domain the path that leads up to your front door. | | Domain Forwarding | Using domain forwarding, you can forward a domain to a specific website. This means that domain and website can be housed at different providers. You can use the following forwarding methods with your BUILDLink website: C-NAME or Nameservers. | | Download | Download a file from a server to your computer or mobile device. | | Drag & Drop | Move content - files in most cases - on your computer, for instance a file upload from your computer to a website. | | Drop Down Menu | A menu button on a website that opens a list of predefined selection options. | | E-commerce | E-commerce describes the process of buying and selling goods on the internet. | | Email | Email stands for electronic mail. They're letters you send over the internet. Attachments can be added to emails, such as images, videos or documents. | | Email Account | An email account is a user account that you can use to send and receive email. It usually consists of a username (before the @) and a domain name (after the @). | | Email Client | An email client or email program is a computer program that you can use to access and manage your email. Typically, the client automatically downloads messages from your email account and imports them to its own interface. | | External Domain | A domain that is registered at an external host, but connected to your BUILDLink website via domain forwarding. | | Facebook Pixel | Facebook Pixel is a piece of code you can place on your website. Using Facebook Pixel, you can gather a variety of data, for instance, how visitors behave on your website. | | Favicon | A small image associated with your website. You can usually see it in your browser tab. | | FTP Server | The File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used for the transfer of files between a client and server on a computer network. | | Google Analytics | A Google tool with which you can analyze traffic on your own website. Next to other metrics, you'll find visitor count, where visitors are from and how long visitors remain on specific pages. | | Google Search Console | By connecting Google Search Console to your website, you can improve your website's online presence. | | Header | The very top of a website design. Composed of a title, logo and navigation menu. | | Host / Domain Host | A domain host or registrar is an online service that manages your domain name (registration / cancellation/ AuthCode). | | Hover Effect | An animation that is displayed when hovering your mouse cursor over that element. | | HTML | HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML is the standard coding language for creating websites. | | Hyperlink | A link through which you can access a resource on the Internet (see URL). | | ICANN | The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the organization that coordinates the internet’s naming system and regulates the domain industry.It is considered the highest authority on domains. It defines registration, renewal and cancellation processes for domains and the different registrars must follow these rules. | | IDN | IDN stands for Internationalized Domain Name. If a domain contains characters that aren't found in the latin alphabet, that domain name cannot be read by all systems. Instead, an IDN is created that replaces these characters with characters that are compatible with all systems. | | IMAP | A method of connecting your email account to your email client. IMAP is the abbreviation for Internet Message Access Protocol. Using IMAP, you can access your emails from any device.If you're reading an email message using IMAP, you aren't actually downloading or storing it on your device. IMAP only downloads a message once you click on it. Also, attachments aren't automatically downloaded. | | Imprint | A text on your website that includes disclaimers and copyright information for content on your website. | | Internal Domain | The domain that you can register directly through BUILDLink. | | IP Address | Devices connected to the internet are identified using the IP address. Simply put, IP addresses are similar to unique postal addresses. | | Keyword | A keyword or search term. When using a search engine, you input certain keywords. The search engine then shows you the most relevant search results related to these keywords. Find out where these keywords should be on your website. | | Landing Page | In digital marketing, a landing page is a standalone web page, created specifically for a marketing or advertising campaign. It’s where visitors "land" after they click on a link.Unlike regular websites, which typically have many goals and encourage exploration, landing pages are designed with a singular focus or goal. | | Layout | The layout describes the way that elements are arranged on a website. A good layout can make your website more clear and easier on the eyes. | | Lightbox | When you click and enlarge an image on the internet, it will most likely appear inside a lightbox. It dims the brightness of the website in the background, thus putting emphasis on the image. | | Link Building | When trying to place links to your own websites on other websites - be it directly or indirectly - this is called link building. The goal of this is to get as many visitors as possible to check out your website. | | MX Records | A mail exchanger record specifies the mail server of a domain. Using MX record, you can connect your domain to an external mail service. | | Nameservers (NS) | Nameservers are services that know the IP addresses of a domain and that are able to allocate and forward them to programs requesting them. Nameservers are an essential part of the domain name system (DNS). | | Navigation | The navigation or website menu is the part of a website that shows the visitors an overview of all available pages. | | Newsletter | A newsletter is an informative email that is sent to people subscribed to that newsletter, providing them with relevant information. So called newsletter tools make managing subscribers and actually sending out the newsletter easy. | | NIC | The Network Information Center regulates the registration and lifecycle of a domain. | | Operating System | An operating system (OS) is a computer system managing your hardware and software.The two most common operating systems are Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS. | | Page Speed | Loading speed of a website and its content. | | PageRank | Position of your website in the search results of a search engine. | | Permalink | The terms permanent and link combined to form the term permalink. Basically, a permanent link that always refers to the same resource on the internet. | | Podcast | Audio or video recordings in an episodic format. | | Pop-up | An additional browser window that opens automatically after a certain action is taken on the website (i.e. changing the page, clicking on something). | | POP3 | A way of connecting your email account to your email client, contacting your email service and downloading all your new messages from there. Once they are downloaded, they are deleted from the email account.After downloading, these emails can only be accessed using the same client and computer or device. If you access your email account from a different device, the messages that have been previously downloaded won't be available anymore. | | PPI | PPI stands for pixel per inch. Not to be confused with the image resolution, PPI defines the density of pixels within an image. | | QR Code | A unique image that contains the necessary information to access your website. You'll find a handful of websites on the internet where you can generate your own QR code for free. | | Quarantine | When a domain name is being deleted, it will first enter a quarantine stage before it is actually deleted from the registrar servers. During this stage, a domain can still be saved from deletion. Depending on the domain extension, the restoration might require a processing fee. | | Registrar | Registrar is another name for a domain hosting service, where you can register your domain. | | Responsive Web Design | A responsive website's design adjusts automatically depending on the size of the screen in order to display the content in the most optimal way. | | Retargeting | When ads on the internet are automatically tailored to your interests, that is called retargeting. Retargeting works using cookies that track your internet history to find out what you might be interested in. | | Safelist | Using the safelist, you allow receiving emails from a specific email address. | | Screenshot | A captured image of your computer screen. It can be taken using either the "print key" on your keyboard or using an additional program. If you're using the "print key", you can paste the image into an image editing program of your choice (i.e. Paint). As a Mac user, you can use the key combination Shift+Cmd ⌘+3. | | SEO | SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Search engines like Google use specific data to index websites and present them as potential search results. SEO is a series of possible improvements that can be made in order to improve a website's visibility in search results. | | SERP | SERP stands for Search Engine Result Page. As the name suggests, this is where you'll see the results once you search something in an internet search. | | Server | A server is a computer that provides data or resources over a network or the internet. | | Sidebar | Part of your BUILDLink website that features the same content, no matter which page you are on. On your BUILDLink website, it can be found underneath the content area. | | Sitemap | A roadmap of your website; a list of all the pages on your website. It can be used to show the existence of pages to search engines like Google. | | Slider | A slider is an element on your website that automatically switches between the displayed content after a set amount of time. That way, different images or texts can be displayed within the same element. | | Snippet | A snippet is a short, written preview of your website that shows up on the result page of search engines along with the link to your website. | | Spam | Unwanted emails containing suspicious content or ads that are distributed systematically. | | SSL | Secure Sockets Layer is the standard network protocol for protecting data exchanged over the internet. | | Stripe | An external service allowing your customers to pay with a credit card. It also processes direct debit payments. | | Subdomain | The sub address of a domain. A subdomain is an additional part at the beginning of a domain. A subdomain can be identified by having multiple dots (i.e. help.jimdo-dolphin.com). For regular domains there's always a single dot (like jimdo.com). | | Thumbnail | A small picture used as a preview for different kinds of media. Most common examples include thumbnails for images and videos (i.e. on YouTube). | | TLD | The Top Level Domain is the last part of a domain name (i.e. .com.org or .net). | | Tracking | Tracking is a blanket term used for all tracking events that happen on a website. This includes simply visiting a website, as well as more detailed behaviour insights (i.e. click paths, which website the visitors came from, etc.). | | Traffic | Traffic or web traffic usually refers to the number of visitors on a website. | | Transfer / Domain Transfer | A domain transfer describes the process of transferring a domain from one domain host to another. For this transfer, an AuthCode is needed in most cases. This AuthCode is being provided by the current domain host. | | Unique Visitors | In tools like Google Analytics, this metric is being used to provide a clearer picture and exclude repeat visits by the same visitors. | | URL | URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. In most cases, this means the complete address that needs to be put into the address bar. This could either be the home page of a website or a specific page (i.e. the page where this text is displayed: https://help.jimdo-dolphin.com/hc/en-us/articles/4406226938132) | | VPN | VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It generates a private connection between your device (i.e. your computer or smartphone) and the internet. Your internet traffic can thus be anonymized and protected. | | Webhost | A service that is hosting your website and enables you to access and manage it online. | | Whois | An online service that can be used to request information regarding specific domains. Frequently used to determine whether a desired domain name is still available. | | Widget | An element with which you can add third party or custom code to your website. | | xml | XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. We use this format for our BUILDLink sitemap. You can access this link using an Internet browser. It is also used to hand the sitemap over to Google Search Console.As an alternative to the .csv format, orders in your store can be exported in .xml format as well. | | Zip File | Blanket term for compressed file archives. Through compression, files can shrink in size. Often, archives are used to put many files into one single file. Typically, such archives can be identified by the .zip extension, but there are many other popular formats, such as .rar.7z .cab and more. |
